Monique, our movement coach/teacher, was available this week, but it turns out it will be her last on the Oblique show, as she’s off to Okinawa and then back to Canada before returning at the end of the summer. I’m very sad that she’s going, but ensemble member Kaito also has a movement background and intends to take over.
In any case, from next we’ve actually got to start digging into creating content for the show a bit more, so the movement work may become shorter.
We did a little bit of content work on both days this week. On Monday, we created environments that we thought of as “Oblique” and put characters/bodies into them. On Wednesday, we worked on an idea that Sahana brought in from a textbook about the four main ways immigrant cultures and react/adapt to joining a host culture. We used Laban movement styles to represent the incoming and host cultures.
This week we had a number of people missing as a summer cold works its way through the ensemble. I’ve got it now as I write this on Thursday and it is NO FUN. I hope it’s out of everyone’s systems in time to start on Monday.
(Also this week, two very dear friends dropped in on Wednesday to join us for our morning movement workshop. I haven’t seen either of them in something like 6 years and they’re both visiting together from England and they just happened to be the only two people I felt I could drop into a YTG rehearsal and have them fit it completely. I am grateful to the ensemble for welcoming Amie and Rachel to the group.)
The show is going up August 17 and 18 both in-person and live on the internet (with recordings available for those who can’t watch it live). No showtimes are set yet, since this is a collectively created piece and we have no idea what the running time will be yet. However, if you want tickets, there are a few ways to make sure you get them.
- Go to the YTG crowdfunding website at https://sponsor.ytg.jp and make a donation of any amount. You’ll get a notice closer to the show date.
- Be on my mailing list (you can join it below), and buy the tickets when the show dates are announced.
- Be on my mailing list and email or message me a for a free ticket if you need one!
If you want to follow along through the creation process, I will try to post weekly updates here on this website (these posts will be sent out to mailing list members as well).
