Oblique Rehearsals, Week 1

This week, I have dived into rehearsals for the YTG summer show! The working title is Oblique, and that is the theme we are working with: indirectness. The thought right now is that we are going to have a very particular set, with the audience on four sides, none of which have a perfect view of all of the playing spaces. But the set is not underway yet: we’re waiting for some CAD drawings from the set team. From there, we’ll figure out what’s feasible.

The current team (as of Wednesday) consists of interns Johanna, Sahana, Clara, Kaito, Alexis, and Flavia; YTG alums Merritt and Chan; and Canadian physical theatre expert Monique. There are more people joining us between now and mid-July, and a few people leaving before the show.

Monique popped up at just the right time a few weeks ago, and has jumped right into rehearsals with us. She has started and will be continuing to lead us through warmups and movement workshops most mornings until she has to leave us in July. I’m super grateful that she’s around, because I think it’s really helping the ensemble come together. We’ve spoken about creating some kind of start-of-rehearsal practice we can use to induct new people as they arrive in order to gel with them as well.

So this week was mostly movement stuff and getting to know each other. We did a little bit of devising on Wednesday, but the focus is building the ensemble and brainstorming ideas. This is a great group and I’m really looking forward to what the rest of the summer is going to bring.

The show is going up August 17 and 18 both in-person and live on the internet (with recordings available for those who can’t watch it live). No showtimes are set yet, since this is a collectively created piece and we have no idea what the running time will be yet. However, if you want tickets, there are a few ways to make sure you get them.

  1. Go to the YTG crowdfunding website at https://sponsor.ytg.jp and make a donation of any amount. You’ll get a notice closer to the show date.
  2. Be on my mailing list (you can join it below), and buy the tickets when the show dates are announced.
  3. Be on my mailing list and email or message me a for a free ticket if you need one!

If you want to follow along through the creation process, I will try to post weekly updates here on this website (these posts will be sent out to mailing list members as well).
