Oblique Rehearsals Week 6

This was the first week that we decided to refocus the ensemble on the members who will be actually performing in the final show and it went quite well. We also started playing with characters and ideas that we came up with, so it felt good to move ahead on that side of things, too. Oh, and I almost forgot to mention that since Monday we started doing a zumba workout every rehearsal. Luckily for me, there are no photos of that, so far.

As happens almost every show, the ensemble are concerned about the contents of the show, but I know that the preparation cannot be rushed, else the meal will be undercooked. If only we had the 6+ months slow cook that a show like this should take, rather than the 6 week microwave zap, but that’s what we’ve got, and at this point, it’s what I’m used to working with. It does mean that there will be a flurry of activity toward the end, but that’s just the way it works.

Other things that I fear are going to be rushed and cause me to literally lose sleep: projections, lighting, box office, to name three.

Things that may be less rushed this time, however, include the set. As I’ve mentioned before, we’ve had the design since the winter, and Marie and Gordon sent us their design drawings last week. Aleyna is confident she can build the frame, and I hope to start work on it on Tuesday. Or rather, I hope that we can get the space so that Aleyna can. I’ll be in Saitama teaching, as usual.

I’ll be missing next Monday’s rehearsal due to Hammy’s after-school club’s camping trip, but I’m hoping next week is even more productive than this week has been.

In the meantime, the money situation has become a bit more urgent. I spent about half of what we’ve raised so far on boxes and desiccant for the costume inventory we’re doing, so if you are planning to watch the show when it airs on the internet (or in person), please read the message below on how to reserve your ticket, get videos of previous show, and, most of all, make sure YTG has the funds to actually make this show happen.

The show is going up August 17 and 18 both in-person and live on the internet (with recordings available for those who can’t watch it live). No showtimes are set yet, since this is a collectively created piece and we have no idea what the running time will be yet. However, if you want tickets, there are a few ways to make sure you get them.

  1. Go to the YTG crowdfunding website at https://sponsor.ytg.jp and make a donation of any amount. You’ll get a notice closer to the show date.
  2. Be on my mailing list (you can join it below), and buy the tickets when the show dates are announced.
  3. Be on my mailing list and email or message me a for a free ticket if you need one!

If you want to follow along through the creation process, I will try to post weekly updates here on this website (these posts will be sent out to mailing list members as well).
