INTERFERENCE rehearsals started with a read-through of the screenplay that forms the basis of our interpretation of the work. The screenplay itself is in an unfinished state, and we were just reading it to get a sense of the piece as a whole before we started work. After reading it, we experimented with creating one of the scenes, partly to show the original artists (Barbara and Marko) what we could do with the tools at our disposal.
Week 2 we didn’t get much done. We struggled with the content and some illness in the cast. I had to cancel the Tuesday rehearsal because only two of us were able to show up, and the Wednesday rehearsal was hampered by the fact that we had two toddlers there. I love little bitty kids, but there weren’t enough of us there to both wrangle them and work on the show.
This past week (week 3), we started creating some of the environments of the play. It seemed easier with Marko in another time zone (Paris) and Barbara feeling a little under the weather and staying home. We created:
- Cafe Dissident on Mars
- Marko’s space capsule (2 versions)
- Mars Exterior (not pictured; we only shot video of this one)
- Ryokan in Chigasaki
We’re now focusing on creating the environments of the scenes and we’ll work on the action of the scenes later. My feeling is that there is currently too much dialogue and not enough action, so we’re going to focus on figuring out the action, making it primary, and then working in the dialogue as text(ture).
Week 1 photos are by Anna Shapiro. Week 2 photos are by both Anna and myself.
The showcase will be presented on April 5 and 6, both in-person and live on the internet (with recordings available for those who can’t watch it live). No showtimes are set yet, since we have no idea what the running time will be yet. However, if you want tickets, there are a few ways to make sure you get them.
- Go to the YTG crowdfunding website at https://sponsor.ytg.jp and make a donation of any amount. You’ll get a notice closer to the show date.
- Be on my mailing list (you can join it below), and buy the tickets when the show dates are announced.
- Be on my mailing list and email or message me a for a free ticket if you need one!
If you want to follow along through the creation process, I will try to post weekly updates here on this website (these posts will be sent out to mailing list members as well).
